Who is Ibn Arabi?

The Sufi scholar, Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi (born July 28, 1165, Murcia, Valencia—died November 16, 1240, Damascus) is mystic, philosopher, poet, sage, one of the world’s great spiritual teachers.

He was dubbed the “Greatest Sheikh” and the “Greatest Infidel.” Ibn Arabi’s life was defined by great intellectual and religious clashes that began centuries ago and continue to this day.

His writings had an immense impact throughout the Islamic world and beyond. The universal ideas underlying his thought are of immediate relevance today.

Ibn Arabi travelled all over the Islamic world in the 12th and 13th centuries, stayed in Hijaz, Iraq, Syria and Armenia. He lived in Mecca, where he wrote his most famous Sufi compositions about the love of God. his experience in Mecca allowed him to reach significant depth of thinking related to the distinction between the material and the abstract. However, He wrote over 350 works.

His wisdom has much to offer us in the modern world in terms of understanding what it means to be human.

Some Ibn Arabi Quotes:

“How can the heart travel to God, when it is chained by its desires?”

“I believe in the religion of Love, whatever direction its caravans may take, for Love is my religion and my faith.”
